Weather in Recinto Quirama (close to Rionegro)

General traveling information to Colombia:
Most participants will arrive in Colombia at the Bogota International Airport - El Dorado (BOG) and go through customs and immigration there.
Currency:
There are several ATMs at the airport - this is in most cases the best way to change money.
The Colombian curreny is the Colombian peso (COP)

Transportation from Medellin International Airport to Recinto Quirama
A pick-up service will be organized between José Maria Cordova Airport (Medellin International airport - MDE) and Hotel Recinto Quirama.
Details on schedule and meeting point will be advertised on this page later on.

Wireless Connection:
There will be free wireless connection everywhere in the hotel.

 

Hotel: room towels are provided, but please take a towel for swimming (outdoor swimmimg pool at the Hotel and excursion to Water Park "los Tamarindos")

Weather: weather conditions can be very varied. In case of hot weather please bring the following: sun glasses, sun cream and hat. But because of the altitude weather could be cold and also humid. Therefore foresee some warmer clothes and protection against rain.

Since the Hotel is surrounded by a nice forest there are insects. If you are particularly sensitive please bring some protection.

Date and Place of the School ^

The 2009 Latin American School of High-Energy will be held from 15 to 28 March 2009 at Hotel Recinto Quirama, Rionegro, Medellin, Colombia. The conference centre is situated in a beautiful forest in the "Parque Tecnológico de Antioquia". Some sport activities are offered free of charge: swimming pool, playground, horse riding. Walks and tourist trails.

Security issues related to organizing the School in Colombia have been carefully considered, and details can be found here.

The conference centre, Hotel Recinto Quirama (a charming restored colonial house) is situated in between the villages of Carmen de Viboral and Rionegro. (See drawing and satellite photo). Zooming in on this photo, you will get a close-up of the centre, which stands at an altitude of 2.200 meters above see level, at approx. 50 km from Medellin and a 5 minutes drive the municipality of Rionegro.

> Registration ^

The registration will take place from 6.00 p.m. on Sunday 15 March in the hotel lobby. The first meal will be dinner on Sunday evening. Departure will be after breakfast on Saturday 28 March.

Poster Session
Students are encouraged to present their current research work in the form of a special poster session which is planned for Thursday 19 March. These posters should, if possible, be prepared before arriving at the School. The recommended size is A1, but other formats can be displayed.
Please note that for the School we will ONLY have a slow InkJet A4 printer for the daily office work, and no other printer is available.

Computer Connections
There is a wireless access nearly everywhere in the Hotel. There will also be a computer room with a limited number of PCs which can be used during the free time.

>Social Programme ^

A welcome drink will be served on Monday 16 March and a farewell banquet on Friday 27 March.
On Saturday 21 March there will be a one-day excursion. We will spend a few hours in Water Park Los Tamarindos, (do not forget to bring your swimming costume) have lunch there and then we will visit Santa Fe de Antioquia, a nice colonial little town and "Puente de Occidente" a national monument.

Also during the free afternoons (Wednesday 18 and Wednesday 25) excursions are planned to Medellin with dinner in Jardin Botanico and to Guatape - Parque de las Culebras, El Penol.

Some evening shows are also planned (folkloric dances and music groups).

> Travel ^

Some hints for your transit at Bogota International Airport:
Pick up your luggage.
Exit from the baggage claim area.
Turn to the right.
Look for 'Avianca Transfers' (it is written in white over red).
At the counter you should show your tickets or the Avianca boarding pass in case you already have one.
Leave your luggage at the counter.
Continue a few meters to board the Avianca bus that will take you to the national terminal 'Puente Aereo'.
You will arrive in the baggage claim area.
Cross the area, turn right into the terminal.
Go through a security check, and then board your flight to Medellin.

School transport (NEW)
The School will organize a transportation from Medellin Airport to Hotel Recinto Quirama on Sunday 15 March
The driver will have a sign with the School poster.
People should just exit the baggage claim area, and look for the driver.

The Hotel is located a 15 minutes drive from José Maria Cordova Airport (MDE), the Medellin International Airport, the second largest airport in Colombia.
We will also organize a “school bus” from Recinto Quirama to Medellin Airport on Saturday 28 March.

Students wishing to organize their own travel, should arrive at the Hotel for registration during the afternoon or evening of Sunday, March 15.
