The 2009 Latin American School of High-Energy Physics will be organized jointly by: the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland; Ministry of Education, Colombia; COLCIENCIAS, Colombia; CIEMAT, Research Organization of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science; Ministry of Science and Technology, Brazil; CLAF, the Centro Latino Americano de Fisica.

The basic aim of the School is to teach various aspects of high-energy physics, and especially theoretical physics, primarily to Post-Graduates in experimental particle physics, typically aged under thirty years and about one year from submitting their Ph.D. theses. However, a few Latin American Post-Doctoral students in experimental high-energy physics and students in theoretical physics, working in particular in particle physics phenomenology, may be accepted, assuming their background knowledge in theoretical physics is of approximately the same level as the experimental Ph.D. students.

The Schools are designed to give a survey of up-to-date information, rather than to be a training course. An outline of each of the lecture courses and reading lists will be published on the web. It should be noticed that some pre-knowledge of the subjects is necessary in order to be able to profit fully from the lecture courses.
Letters of acceptance will be sent to the selected students.

> Date and Place of the School ^

The fifth in the new series of CERN Latin American School of High-Energy Physics will be held at Recinto Quirama, Antioquia Region, close to Medellin, Colombia, in the period 15 to 28 March, 2009. The official address of the hotel is Hotel Recinto de Quirama, Rionegro Medellin, Colombia.

Recinto Quirama

The conference centre, Hotel Recinto Quirama (a charming restored colonial house) is situated in between the villages of Carmen de Viboral and Rionegro. (See drawing and satellite photo). Zooming in on this photo, you will get a close-up of the centre, which stands at an altitude of 2.200 meters above see level, at approx. 50 km from Medellin and a 15 minutes drive from José Maria Cordova Airport (MDE), the Medellin International Airport. The airport, the second largest airport in Colombia, is located in the municipality of Rionegro and is named after José Maria Cordova, a Colombian army general who was a native of Rionegro.

> Accommodation ^

Students and staff of the School will lodge at the conference centre, Recinto Quirama, where also breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served. Students will share twin rooms with bathroom, TV and telephone. The conference centre has a swimming pool and possibilities for horse riding and nice walks.
The lecture hall and the rooms for the discussion sessions are also situated in the hotel, which is equipped with computing and electronic communication facilities.
The conference centre is situated in a beautiful forest in the "Parque Tecnológico de Antioquia".

There will be 33 lectures in all, each lasting about 75 minutes, with additional time for questions and discussion.
Students will be encouraged to present their current research work in the form of posters which will be put up for a special poster session planned for Thursday, March 19. The posters will remain displayed until the end of the school, and the poster titles and their authors will be published in the school procedings.

> Discussion Sessions ^

Discussion sessions, which are intended to clarify points that may be obscure from the lectures, will be held most afternoons and will last about 75 minutes.

The working language of the School is English. Participants should therefore have a good understanding of English to enable them to benefit from the School.

> Proceedings ^

The School Proceedings will be published as a CERN Yellow Report in 2010. Each participant will receive one copy free of charge. > Travel ^

Students should arrange to arrive at the conference centre for registration during the afternoon or evening of Sunday, March 15. The school will end on the morning of Saturday, March 28 after breakfast. On the day of arrival a pick-up service will be organized between José Maria Cordova Airport and Hotel Recinto Quirama. More and up-to-date information about bus schedules, pick-up service, etc. will be given in an information bulletin closer to the time of the school.
Note that students should not make firm bookings for travel to the school before they have been accepted, and travel details for funded students must be agreed in advance by the School organizers.
> Cost ^

The cost of the School will be around 1000 US$ per student, and will cover tuition, board and lodging from dinner on Sunday, March 15 to breakfast on Saturday March 28, 2009, as well as coffee, tea or cold drinks during the morning and afternoon breaks, in addition to some social activities. It does not include travel expenses from participants' home institutes to Recinto Quirama and back, visa fees (where required) or the cost of insurance covering illness and accidents that is required for all participants.

Thanks to support from the Colombian Ministry of Education and COLCIENCIAS, the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, in addition to CERN, CIEMAT and CLAF, it will be possible to fully or partly cover the school fees and travel expenses for some of the Latin American students who otherwise would not be able to attend the school.
However, since the central funds are limited, we hope and expect that a majority of the institutes will be able to cover, fully or at least partially, the expenses of their students. This will allow the School to cover the fees and travel costs for the largest possible number of Latin American students who are not able to obtain full financial support from their home institutes.
Comments on the need for financial support should be given at the end of the application form.
Students from outside Latin America must have school fees and travel cost covered by their institutes. However, a few scholarships for partial funding of such students may be availabe depending on the financial situation.

Details concerning the method of payment of the fees will be sent together with the acceptance letters. At the same time, funded students will be informed of the procedures to be followed for making travel arrangements and applying for visas (where required).

> Participation ^

The School is open to PhD students in experimental particle physics, typically aged under thirty years and about one year from submitting their PhD theses. However, a few Latin American Post-Doctoral students in experimental high-energy physics and Master's Degree students in theoretical physics may be accepted, assuming their background knowledge in theoretical physics is of approximately the same level as the experimental PhD students. The number of students will be about 70, mostly from Latin America, although the School is also open to a limited number of students from other countries and regions.
 Personal contacts and informal discussions among the participants during leisure time are an important aspect of the School and, for this reason, participants are asked to note that they should not be accompanied by family members or friends.

Applications to attend the School should include:
For the Application Form remember to fill in ALL fields: use "N/A" when "Not Applicable".


The application form should be completed as soon as possible and must be received by the closing date of 9 November, 2008.
The name of the professor or supervisor and the date of the reference letter should be indicated in the appropriate boxes on the Web application form.
Applications without a reference letter (see below) will not be considered.

Reference Letter
The submission of the completed application form must be accompanied in parallel by a letter of reference and ranking from the student's professor or supervisor, signed and dated with letterhead of the referee's institution.
A scanned copy in pdf format sent by email by the supervisor is preferable. If this is not possible a hard copy or a fax would be acceptable.

Students who wish to apply but who do not have a suitable browser for the Web application form should request a hard copy of the form from the Organizing Secretary (see Enquiries and Correspondence), stating clearly their name and postal address and accompanied by the 100-word summary of their current work.

Candidates should ensure that their application and letter of reference reach the CERN Organizing Secretary by 9 November 2008.

The selection of the students will be made by the Organizing Committee; and all applicants will be informed end of November 2008 whether or not they have been selected.
